How We Helped an Established Software Business Save $30,000 Annually by Modernizing Its Software

More than a decade of software development partnership, modernizing legacy applications, protecting a successful commercial product, and reducing ongoing infrastructure costs.

The challenge: Keeping valuable software moving forward

Successful software products can have a long commercial life. But as technology evolves, the systems supporting them can become increasingly difficult and expensive to maintain.

This was the exact challenge facing one of our long-standing customers—an established software business with a commercially successful, proprietary desktop application.

An important feature of this product is its integrated chatroom functionality. This tool provides a live community environment for professional stock traders to communicate, exchange ideas, and discuss trading strategies.

Because the chatrooms are an essential part of the user experience, keeping this functionality running reliably was critical to both the software provider and its users.

A long-term engineering partnership

Our relationship with the customer began more than ten years ago with a payment processor integration.

Since then, we have worked together on a succession of development and modernization projects, helping the business address changing technology requirements while continuing to scale its software products.

Maintaining payment functionality as technology changes

Our initial engagement involved updating an existing application to accommodate critical updates to a third-party payment processor’s API.

While payment integrations are core to many commercial applications, external API changes frequently require fast modifications to maintain compatibility. We updated the integration smoothly to meet the revised requirements, helping the customer protect its core revenue-processing capabilities.

This brief project established the foundation for our ongoing development relationship.

Transforming a legacy ASP application

As the partnership matured, we were engaged to modernize an existing application built entirely on classic ASP technology.

Rather than simply patching the aging application, we undertook a complete redevelopment using modern C# technologies. This provided an immediate opportunity to improve the application’s functionality while permanently migrating away from technical debt.

The result was far more than a technical upgrade; it created a highly maintainable, modern foundation for all future development.

One of our most significant projects involved modernizing the C++ chatroom server supporting the customer’s flagship desktop application.

The existing chatroom server depended strictly on legacy versions of Windows Server. Continuing to host these older environments was becoming increasingly expensive, leaving the customer facing steep premium charges simply to maintain legacy software compatibility.

We undertook a comprehensive modernization of the C++ server software, enabling it to run natively on current Windows Server versions.

Slashing infrastructure overhead

This engineering shift addressed the underlying technology dependency without requiring the customer to replace its established desktop product or abandon its active trading community.

The financial benefit was immediate and substantial: The modernization reduced hosting expenditure by approximately $2,500 per month—an annual savings of around $30,000.

Just as importantly, it enabled the customer to seamlessly support an established product and the trading communities that rely on it daily.

The results: Better software and significant commercial savings

Our work across these projects delivered a clear range of business benefits:

  • $30,000 in annual hosting savings by eliminating premium expenditure on legacy Windows Server environments.
  • Modernized server architecture enabling the C++ chatroom server to run seamlessly on current OS versions.
  • Product longevity protection by extending the lifecycle of business-critical desktop application functionality.
  • Web application modernization through the redevelopment of legacy ASP systems into C#.
  • Enhanced UX and functionality rather than simply reproducing outdated application behaviors.
  • Uninterrupted payment processing via proactive updates to third-party APIs.

More than a decade of partnership

What began as a focused payment integration project has grown into a collaborative relationship spanning more than ten years. Over that time, we’ve helped the customer navigate diverse technical hurdles, reduce infrastructure costs, and protect its core commercial software.

This reflects our fundamental approach to custom software development. We believe the best solutions come from deeply understanding a client’s business, taking end-to-end responsibility for the engineering process, and building software that delivers lasting value.

Our job isn’t simply to write software. It’s to help businesses extract more value from their technology, protect their legacy investments, and build a scalable foundation for the future.
